About the Author

As with many poets I have tasted innumerable aspects of life in the twentieth century. From my boyhood by the source of the great river Lea through sojourns at Leeds University, Plater College Oxon and The Maryvale Institute. Yet some of my most iconic days were spent at the Carnegie Library in Luton.

Cardinal Hume presents the author with an MA in Theology

On my travels in Europe and North America I have watched listened and learnt and enjoyed most of the many people and places I’ve visited. Here in England is the best of my memories where from child to adulthood I have learnt and loved. As the world shrinks with the facility of the means of rapid transport, so we cherish the wonders and excitement of those places we have known since childhood. The romance of our treasured memories is the bedrock of the artistry of true verse.

This collection of verse is part
of the work of one of the major
poets of our era. The title is a
quotation which reflects the
philosophy of the eminent
Greek writer Epicurus who
wrote some two and a half
centuries before Christ.
When contemplating beauty
and truth in harmony with
the moral duty of doing good,
the human person seeks
serenity, balance and peace.
